CISTERNOGRAM

Cerebrospinal Fluid Imaging

A cisternogram is a nuclear imaging test that shows the distribution of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the clear fluid that surrounds and protects your brain and spinal cord. This specialized exam helps your physician evaluate the flow and absorption of CSF, which is important in diagnosing conditions such as CSF leaks, hydrocephalus (excess fluid in the brain), and other abnormalities affecting the central nervous system.

The test uses a small amount of radioactive material injected into the spinal column, with imaging performed at multiple intervals over the course of two to three days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your back will first be numbed locally with an anesthetic. You may feel some pain as the area is numbed. Next, the radioactive material will be injected into your spinal column with a needle. You may feel slight pressure as the needle is inserted into the lower back. The needle will be removed after the injection.

Scans of your back and head will be taken at various intervals of time. Typically, imaging sessions will take place at three hours, 24 hours, 48 hours, and, sometimes, 72 hours after your injection.

A cisternogram is a multi-day procedure. After the initial injection, you’ll return for imaging sessions at various intervals—typically at 3 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours, and sometimes 72 hours after your injection. Each imaging session itself is relatively brief.

Your back will be numbed with a local anesthetic before the injection, though you may feel some discomfort during the numbing process. You may feel slight pressure as the needle is inserted into your lower back, but the area should be numb during the injection.

A cisternogram helps diagnose conditions related to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), including CSF leaks, hydrocephalus (excess fluid in the brain), normal pressure hydrocephalus, and other abnormalities affecting CSF flow and absorption.

No. After each imaging session, you’re free to leave and go about your normal activities. You’ll simply return to the facility at your scheduled imaging times over the next 2-3 days.
